Passages is a community-puzzle-solving mobile game that will be out in Q4 2022. It's a puzzle-platformer but you can't see the platforms.

History

brûle.

brûle. is a Game Studio from Lyon (France) & Hamburg (Germany). It was founded in 2014 by Frédéric Urien. Originally the studio was mostly involved in educational projects and created many learning apps to improve the teaching of science disciplines in universities. To motivate students and create efficient learning environments, the studio started to make games and quickly became addicted to it. To further explore the potential of "talking about things through games", they created Savvy Community, a community/lab devoted to the making of short benevolent games while experimenting collective intelligence approaches to make the process pleasant, efficient and fulfilling. They got good at fast-prototyping innovative game concepts and kept on giving their games a "savvy" touch, which became a major part of the studio's identity. The studio's goal is to make great games that make the player live impactful experiences leading to questioning, reflecting and opening up. In the early 2022, brûle. received public funding from France's Video Game Fund (FAJV) in order to produce its first commercial game, based on Savvy Community's 22nd jam game: Passages.

Passages

Passages is a minimalist, narrative-driven puzzle-platformer game in which the platforms are completely invisible. In order to complete each puzzle and travel onwards, the player needs to rely on the tracks left behind by their previous attempts, as well as on the ones left by other players. The poetic narrative leads to live an introspective journey with many challenges to overcome. Its minimalist atmosphere and calm music make it a well suited game for a quiet break time.

Intentions

With Passages, we wanted to make a solo game in which any player feel connected to the others, as members of the same greater community of people. Our goal was for our players to assimilate other as rays of hope, helping hands, travel companions. Through its gameplay we wanted to show that despite differences, all humans lean towards a similar goal, influencing and helping each other along the way. On the personal level, Passages emphasize the necessity of failing to improve, learn and finally succeed. Without any text or dialogue, it tells the universal story of the self and its journey through different states, feelings and emotions.

Passages is currently in beta-testing and will be out in November 2022 on android & iOS. It will be free-to-play and will feature 200+ levels for 15+ hours of gameplay. Please contact us if you want to play it before its official release.
